New Year Distraction
Look, I know that there is no show. See… when I have no computer and fils missing, it’s hard to put on a show. So instead I am gong to distract you with some photos of a cute little girl who I knitted a hat for from the Itty Bitty Hat book:
I.C.U.
Ok… so my computer is in the I.C.U. right now. Because of this I have not been able to get out the three great interviews I have currently. Please hang in tough with me. I will try and put together the 20 stories day on New Years day with my wifes computer, but the other interviews are on my computer that crashed…
So… ugh…
Please feel free to send in a story for the 20 stories show (see last post)
A twit for stories…
So I was listening to This American Life yesterday and they did a show where they crammed 20 stories into an hour. The radio show was inspired by a theater group in Chicago that has a similar theme to it. This concept of short story telling seems like a lot of fun to me.
So in true short story fashion(you can’t get much shorter than a twitter message), I twitted my intention to do a show with 20 stories. The response so far is excellent and I should have 20 stories soon enough. If you would like to participate here are the ground rules:
- I need a 2-3minute mp3 or wav recording of you telling your story that loosely relates to casting-on (as in starting a project)
- I need your name (as much as you would like to give), title (if it applies, mine would be head host of itsapurlman), and location (again, as much as you would like to give up… I would be Boston)
- I need your permission to use the audio
- I need it by January 1st ( will put the show together on January1st)
Please feel free to put all the info above in one recording and place it in my drop box. (I will edit out everything but the story, the rest is for housekeeping) If you cannot record on your own, try using the voicemail number 646-402-5686 x53198 (this will end up in the drop box.
If you have any questions, comments, or would like to let me you are on twitter (and are a listener of my show) feel free to leave a comment here or contact me at twitter. (better than email because everyone else who has the same question can see the answer).
Testing…
I am trying out a new theme this week. Let me know wat you think…
IAPM57:Boston Handmade Downtown
Jessica Burko (the force behind Boston Handmade) and some of the exhibitors at Boston Handmade Downtown (located here) sit down with me to talk about the holidays and fiber fun. Jen of Blue Alvarez, Lynn of Cozy Cottage Creations, and Sedruola of Sedruola’s Yarn Obsession all have some interesting insight on making stuff for people as gifts and getting through the holiday season.
Also… I have an update about my Knit One Save One (KOSO) project. Some stores I have contacted have offered to collect caps as well as hand out some donated materials for me. You can pick up two balls of yarn (courtesy of Kraemer Yarns) for making hats for KOSO while supplies last and drop off caps for KOSO until Sunday January 18th at the following locations:(in alphabetical order)
Mind’s Eye Yarns in Porter Square
Windsor Button in Downtown Crossing
Woolcott and Company in Harvard Square
While there is some confusion about deadlines and what is written on KOSO’s brochure, I assure you we have until the end of January to send in the caps.
I would like to thank all the people who are donating caps to KOSO and the following companies for donating yarn for my KOSO project:
Kraemer Yarns
Westminster Fibers
The Yarn and Fiber Company
Tyson Hunger Relief
From the Twitter universe I have this request for you:
RT @nathanwburke:
Tyson foods will give 100lbs of food to the boston food bank for each comment left on http://hungerrelief.tyson.com
IAPM56:Mr. Gobbles
Today’s episode has an interview with Beverly of Ewe’ll Love it in NH. I also talk about my Knit One Save One Project, my pattern is coming soon. Finally I tell you a thanksgiving story about me and my sister and the Macy’s parade, here is the photo:

My family are all a bunch of turkeys...
MUSIC:
Yoga Master by Lee Coulter
It’s crochet, It’s still crochet…
So I have been recieving links about this video from family. It a segment in the LA Times about a bus being covered by fiber in Mexico by Knitta Please. Now, I know she does knitted pieces and I know she is all about breaking perceptions of knitting… something about knitting and grafffitti being a little less granmotherly… and I think the bus is awesome…
but…
She’s crocheting… she’s crocheting the bus (think soilent green). In the video she has a crochet hook in her hand. Is it too much for her to say I am crocheting most of this bus? Or is there perhaps another word for general fiber activity goodness?
I feel like not explaining this to people will confuse the muggles… and it confuses me a bit to. I like to know technique and fiber content of FOs.
ugh!!
IAPM55:One Take Wonder
On today’s show I do some catching up. I recorded the whole thing in one take and only added some music a the end.
The last couple of weeks have been a lot of fun and I have been knitting and crocheting up a storm. My brother got me started working on the Knit One Save one project and have had a lot of support from all the folks I run into. Perhaps I will put together an event for January for this project.
Music is by Chris Ayer “A Starfish In The Front Yard”
More links to come…
Added somewat LATER:
This show has a lot of discussion of my insane knitting life and the many things that are going on in Boston. I also talk a little bit about my friend Gary and his wife Lynn… I also talk about Prairie Home Companion and the song sailing around the room.
In my yarn-a-lot I talk about a hat I made for my friend gary of made of some Cascade 220 619 which I covet. I am also making a baby sweater out of some awesome organic cotton(it’s like terry cloth). I am making a couple of Olive You hats from Itty Bitty Hats.
Many thanks to Kraemer Yarns and Westminster Fiber for donating to my Knit One Save One Project.
IAPM54:S.A.D.
So… show notes will come up later.. but for the moment I am having technical difficulties and am going to spend my time trying to get the links working again so that this end up in the feed… so this post is going to be updated tonight with all sort of good stuff about the show including my two interviews and music and a little bit more about the passing of Lynn.
Added LATER.. much LATER:
On the show I interview Janice Kissinger, Director of Slater Mill in Rhode Island and Cindy, Owner of The Yarn and Fiber Company in NH. I would like to thank Jane from Porter Square Books for helping the guild (I messed up the website on the show)host The Yarn Harlot. I would also like to thank Franklin ans Stephanie for for speakinin Boston.
If you would like to learn more about my friend Lynn Votour and Gary Votour please visit her caring bridge site. Gary would appriciate any donations made in Lynn’s name to the Caring Bridge. The service they provide s crucial for the families of people in the hospital.
The music on the show comes from the Podshow Network and I played the Mega Bottle Ride by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros on todays show. (this song really chokes me up and make me happy and sad at the same time… weird)
Finally… thank you all for your suggestions for working through my feelings about friends lost. Sorry the show notes took so long. (also, the title is a little nod toward the Seasonal Affective Disorder, because I get down in the fall..)
